Boulder permitting considerations
Boulder’s sign code is one of the strictest on the Front Range, regulating the size, number, type and location of signs on a building. Planning the design around it from the start is the whole job — a concept drawn without reference to the code will simply not be approved.
Specifics that matter on a Boulder project:
- A licensed sign contractor must obtain the permit and install the sign. This is not optional, and it rules out self-installation.
- Building Owner Authorization is required if the applicant is not the property owner.
- Applications identify each sign individually — location, unique identifier and the building elevation it appears on.
- Exemptions are defined in the code, at B.R.C. Section 9-9-21(c), and they are narrower than most people expect.
- Applications go through the city’s Customer Self-Service portal.
Because the exterior allowance is limited, we often recommend putting more of the brand budget into interior signage and window graphics, where the constraints are far lighter. Requirements change — we confirm current standards with the city on every project.
